The activities in this kit examine the uniqueness and importance of fish and elodea algae; two of the main living resources of the ocean. Students study the relationship of form and function in fish as they examine fin shapes and sizes, body shapes, mouth size and shape, color and camouflage. Students predict habitats and behaviors by observing structures on fresh fish and may use a dichotomous key to identify the fish by genus species. They will study oxygen production through photosynthesis in elodea. Required, but not included: microscopes, fresh whole fish, elodea, lamps or sockets with bulbs, ice and a cooler, and glassware. Designed for 24 students working in six groups of four.
Grades 9-12
