Guide students through the investigative process of a blood spatter detective
using this inquiry based activity. Just like the detective, they will design and
conduct a simple experiment to model how blood reacts and how blood spatter
patterns change in response to variables. They may choose to investigate the
effects of angle, force, distance, surface texture, rate of movement, velocity at
impact, number of blows, or location of the victim. They may investigate the
difference in spatter due to cast-off, blunt force trauma or projectile trauma.
They might compare patterns due to impact spatter, passive spatter, transfer
spatter, or projected spatter. Just like the detective, students will analyse and
present their results as evidence to support their case. This kit includes an
instructor’s manual with reproducible student pages, simulated blood, butcher
paper, claw hammer, two screwdrivers, scissors, plastic knives, protractors,
measuring tapes, and plastic pipettes. The kit may be used independently or as
an introduction or companion to the analysis activities provided in EduScience
Blood Spatter Kit # ESF53516.
