(Lab Supports Photosynthesis and Respiration, Energy Storage and Transport)
Students model cellular osmosis and diffusion in the lab and study the different methods of cellular transport; passive transport, active transport, facilitated diffusion, pinocytosis and phagocytosis. Students learn how plant and animal cells obtain and store chemical energy. They learn how energy is released during cellular respiration and stored as ATP. They compare the energy content of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins using calorimetry. They compare the processes of anaerobic and aerobic respiration and the organisms in which each occurs. Students study the process of photosynthesis and separate simulated plant pigments using paper chromatography.
Requires thermometers, beaker, test tubes, test tube support, goggles, scissors, colored pencils, matches, and food samples for calorimetry. Grades 7-10.
